Lawmakers Request Administration Officials Return to the Negotiating Table in Softwood Lumber Dispute

 

171 members of the House of Representatives have sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, the United States (U.S.) Trade Representative, asking that the U.S. return to the negotiating table with Canada and redouble efforts to reach a new softwood lumber agreement. NLBMDA led the way in building support for the letter, and comes as lumber prices have reached record highs.

NLBMDA Applauds Changes to Banking and Finance Laws

 

The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) applauds action taken by the White House and Congress to make needed changes to America’s banking and finance laws. The changes alleviate some of the regulatory constraints on community banks that have impeded a more robust housing and economic recovery. NLBMDA supports the changes and is a welcome development for the housing industry.

White House Extends Steel Tariff Exemptions for Canada, European Union, and Mexico

 

President Donald Trump has announced the United States (U.S.) is providing a 30-day extension exempting steel imports from Canada, European Union (EU) member countries, and Mexico from tariffs. The temporary exemption expires on June 1 and U.S. trade officials have said that there will not be any further short-term exemptions. The decision comes as the temporary exemptions were set to expire today.

The document brings focus to the common interests of the lumber and building industry and includes public policy goals for the continued success and growth of the nation's housing and building sector.
